COSTA MESA, Calif. - The University of Utah men's tennis team wrapped up competition at the Costa Mesa Futures tournament Saturday after advancing three to the second round Friday.
"We came here to play some tough competition and to measure ourselves against some very good players, said first year head coach Roeland Brateanu. "We had some tough draws, but competed extremely well."
Senior Cedric Willems led the way with an impressive come-from-behind victory over 12th seeded Boris Bakalov, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. He won the set after being down 2-5 and saving two match points in the third set. In the second round Saturday, Willems lost in a tough three-set match to Ryoto Tachi of UCLA, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
Fifteenth-seeded senior Slim Hamza and junior Matt Cowley both cruised to easy victories in the first round. Hamza dispatched Jamie Vance, 6-1, 6-0, while Cowley beat Nicolas Dowell, 6-0, 6-0. In the second round Saturday, Hamza was defeated by Christopher Helliard, 7-6(4), 6-3. Cowley played a solid match against 2013 ITA All-American and fifth seeded Andre Dome, but came up short and fell, 7-5, 6-3.
Sophomore Parker McGuiness couldn't overcome an early defect in the first round against 16th seeded Michal Dembek and lost, 2-6, 4-6.
The Utes return to action at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Willems, Cowley, and McGuiness will represent Utah in the pre-qualifying singles draw starting Sept. 27, while Hamza will compete in the main draw beginning Oct. 2. He and Willems will team up and appear in the qualifying doubles draw, Sept. 29.
