PROVO, Utah - Freshman Santiago Sierra and junior transfer Jamey Swiggart have started their Ute careers with great success as they both reached the quarterfinals of the singles main draw at the Utah Fall Classic at BYU.
"It's great to see Jamey and Santi picking up solid wins in their first outing as Utes," said assistant coach Daniel Pollock. "Both of their second round opponents were regular starters in the BYU lineup last year, so those were confidence boosting performances. We're hoping to see Justin, Johan, and LP bounce back strong in the consolation draw tomorrow."
Swiggart handily beat Steven Balls, 6-1, 6-1, in the first round, then followed with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over BYU's Jeremy Bourgeois in the second round, to reach the quarterfinals. He will face Shane Monroe (BYU) at 1 p.m. Friday.
After enjoying a bye in the first round, Sierra joined Swiggart in the quarterfinals after beating Jacob Sullivan (BYU), 6-4, 7-5, in second round action. The Mexican national will now face second seeded and defending champion Andrey Goryachkov Friday at 1 p.m.
The new Utes also teamed up in doubles play to beat Tyler Loong and Paul Monson, 8-5. In the quarterfinal round, they will face former BYU Cougars and second seeded Michael Eraso and Patrick Kawka.
