LINCOLN, Neb. - The University of Utah men's tennis team (10-2) eked out a 4-3 victory over the 44th-ranked Nebraska Huskers (7-5) Friday at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The Utes captured the doubles point while senior Ben Tasevac secured the upset with a win from the No. 2 singles position.
"We are really proud of the team," said assistant coach Roeland Brateanu. "Nebraska is a very good team, but we competed very well and fought for each other. It feels good to come up with a win in such a closely contested match, especially given the hostile environment we faced. It was a great team win"
Utah started the day off strong as juniors Slim Hamza and Ben Tasevac downed Brandon Videtich and Bradford Zitsch at the No. 1 doubles spot, 8-2. Huskers Dusty Boyer and Scott Elsass then answered with an 8-4 win over senior Alejandro Medinilla and sophomore Matt Cowley at the No. 3 position.
But Utah's undefeated senior duo Tasevac and Devin Lane wouldn't allow their record to be broken and netted a tight 8-6 victory at the second slot over Marc Herrmann and Beau Treyz.
Nebraska quickly tied the match at one apiece when Medinilla was defeated by Tom Blackwell at the No. 3 singles spot, 6-4, 6-2.
The Utes answered when Lane then routed Vasileios Stavropoulos 6-4, 6-3, which improved his record at the No. 5 position to 8-1 and put the Utes up 2-1. Willems then fell to Andrew Dzulynsky at the fourth slot, 6-3, 6-3, tying the match at two apiece.
No. 110 Hamza then suffered a tough 7-6(6), 6-2 upset by Dusty Boyer at the top position, putting the Husker up 3-2. But Utah once again responded with another victory as Cowley narrowly defeated Charlie Shin by a score of 6-4, 7-5 at the sixth spot.
With the match deciding point relying on match at the No. 2 position, Tasevac dropped the first set to Herrmann 4-6. But the Pac-12 Player of the Week honoree rallied in the subsequent sets 7-5, 6-3, to close out Utah's third upset of the season with a 4-3 win over the 44th-ranked Huskers.
The Utes return to action Saturday against No. 45 Drake (7-4) at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The match has been reschedule to begin at 5 p.m. CT (4 p.m. MT).
