NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Utah senior defensive lineman Nate Orchard and punter Tom Hackett were announced as first-team Walter Camp All-Americans on The Home Depot ESPN College Football Awards show.
The Walter Camp is the nation's oldest All-America team and one of five teams used by the NCAA to determine the season's consensus All-Americans. The others are the Associated Press, Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and Sporting News.
In addition, Hackett and senior punt returner Kaelin Clay were both first-team selections on the CBSSports.com All-America team. Hackett and Orchard were also first-team picks on the Scout.com team and the SB Nation team while Clay was a second-team selection on the Scout.com team.
Orchard leads the nation in sacks per game (1.46) and is second in total sacks (17.5). His 17.5 sacks is a Utah single-season record and his 113 yards off sacks is one shy of the school record. Orchard is fourth in the nation in tackles for loss per game (1.7) and ranks fifth in total tackles for loss (20.0 for 118 yards). He has 81 total tackles.
Hackett, a finalist for the Ray Guy Award, leads the nation in punts inside the 20-yard line (35) and inside the 10-yard line (19), and ranks second nationally in punt average (47.0). The two-time first-team All-Pac-12 pick has landed 35-of-77 (45.5%) punts inside the 20 this season, a percentage that leads the conference. Utah ranks third in the nation in net punting (42.81).
Clay leads the Pac-12 and ranks fourth in the nation in punt return average (16.9). He is one of two players in the country this season with three punt returns for touchdowns and four total returns (1 kickoff) for a touchdown. Utah ranks sixth in the NCAA in punt return average (15.15).
This season marks the first time that Utah has placed two players on the Walter Camp All-America first team and Hackett is the first Utah punter ever to make the first team. Orchard is the second Ute defensive lineman on the Walter Camp first team, joining Star Lotulelei (2012).
With Orchard and Hackett's selection, Utah has now placed six players on the Walter Camp All-America first team in its history. The others are Lotulelei, offensive lineman Jordan Gross (2002), kicker Louie Sakoda (2008) and punt returner Shaky Smithson (2010). Utes who made the Walter Camp second team include Alex Smith (2004), Eric Weddle (2006), offensive lineman Zane Beadles (2009) and offensive lineman Caleb Schlauderaff (2010).
Walter Camp, "The Father of American football," first selected an All-America team in 1889, and the 2014 team is the 125th for the Walter Camp Football Foundation. The team is selected by the 125 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors. It is one of the five teams used by the NCAA to determine the consensus All-Americans for the year.
