Providence, R.I. – The University of Utah women’s tennis team closed day two of the Brown Classic Saturday with six total victories throughout both days of competition. Conducted as a hidden dual tournament, Utah was against Stony Brook Friday and Brown Saturday with the Utes splitting victiories evenly in both match ups.
The Utes recorded one doubles and two singles victories in day one. Jena Cheng fought her way to a three-set victory, defeating Adey Osabuohien 6-7, 6-2, 6-4. Alexia Petrovic battled through another three-set match against Elizabeth Tsvetkov, coming away with the victory 6-4. 5-7, 6-3. Cheng and Elena Najera-Salas teamed up in doubles play to take an 8-6 victory over Adey Osabuohien and Kristina Vozniak.
In day two, the Utes collected three more victories to split the match with Brown. Cheng assisted with another Ute doubles win, but this time matched with Alexa Petrovic to take an 8-4 victory over Olivia Hsu and Sarah Kandath.
Cheng continued to lead the Utes into singles play, defeating Alyza Benotto 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Topping Victoria Traynor 6-1 in the first set, Elena Najera-Salas claimed Utah’s second single’s victory of the day after the remainder of the match was called.
“This was a huge win for our freshman Jena [Cheng] today,” said Utah head coach Mat Iandolo. “Benotto is one of the top freshman in the country.”
The Utes continue play tomorrow and are slated to face Arkansas.
