SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team prepares to host the Utah Intercollegiates this weekend at Coach Mike's Tennis Academy, weather permitting. This weekend marks the 11th-consecutive year the Utes have hosted the tournament. Participating teams include BYU, Utah State, Weber State and Utah. Spectators are welcome and admission to the tournament is free.
Tournament Format
Play will begin each morning at 9 a.m. Thursday's schedule includes two rounds of doubles action and one round of singles. Friday and Saturday's schedule will feature one round of singles and one round of doubles. In the case of inclement weather, the tournament will be moved indoors to Eccles Tennis Center.
Flight A
Senior and vice-captain Cedric Willems is the No. 2 seed in Flight A. Willems has a bye in the first round and will play Marcus Fritz (Utah State) in the quarterfinals at 11:30 a.m. Junior Matt Cowley is slated to face Juan Canales (BYU) in the first round at 10 a.m. Freshman Santiago Sierra rounds out the Utes' representation in Flight A, and he will play at 10 a.m. versus Karan Salwan (Utah State) in the first round.
Flight B
Junior Jamey Swiggart is seeded No. 3 in Flight B. He has a bye in the first round and will play the winner of the match between teammate Louis-Phillipe Gascon and David Ball (BYU). Gascon and Ball's match will begin at 10 a.m. The next round is scheduled to begin shortly after at 12:30 p.m. Junior Justin Archer will take on Jaime Barajas (Utah State) in the first round at 10 a.m. Freshman Johan Jonhagen is final Ute in Flight B. He will contest Andrew Nakajima (Utah State) at 10 a.m.
Doubles
Willems and Swiggart are the No. 2 seed and have a bye in the first round. They will face Cosmai and Nakajima (Utah State) on Friday at 9 a.m. Gacson and Jonhagen are slated against Canales and Bourgeouis (BYU) in the first round on Thursday at 9 a.m. Cowley and Sierra have a bye in the first round and will play No. 4 seed Salwan and Swindells (Utah State) on Friday at 9 am.
Last Time at the Utah Intercollegiates
The Utes dominated the 2013 Utah Intercollegiate Tournament, capturing championship singles titles in the red and black draws, as well as Group B of the doubles draw at Coach Mike's Tennis Academy.
The Utes defeated opponents from BYU to capture titles in the Red Draw. Second-seeded and Slim Hamza, who went undefeated in the tournament, bested Francis Sargeant in the finals, 6-4, 6-4, to clinch the championship title. Senior Ben Tasevac beat out Andrey Goryachkov, 6-3, 7-6(3) to take third place.
Utah also dominated the singles Black Draw all the way into the finals, where first-seeded Devin Lane and second-seeded Alejandro Medinilla battled for the championship. Medinilla emerged victorious with the title, 7-6(8), 7-5.
In doubles action, Medinilla and Tasevac won Group B by beating Matt Pearce and Jeremy Bourgeois of BYU, 8-7(4). The Utes started the match off slow, losing their first service game, but battled their way back into the match and found a way to win in the tiebreaker.
