OAKLAND, Calif.- The University of Utah women's cross country team wrapped up action at the Pac-12 Championships with a ninth-place finish. Led by the 41st-place performance of Sarah Feeny, the Utes finished the day with 241 points to edge Washington State by five points.
"We had a mixed bag of results for individual performances," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "I am not going to say that our ninth-place finish was disappointing, but we certainly had higher hopes than that and we are going to learn from this and get better. "
"From an effort standpoint, and being mentally prepared, I felt like we did everything right," Kepler continued. "Our runners came out ready to go and were excited to compete against other teams in the Pac-12. The Pac-12 is the toughest conference in the country. I feel like we would have finished a lot higher in most other leagues, but in this league you can't have an off day."
Leading the way for the Utes, Feeny was running with the top-20 competitors for the majority of the race but couldn't hold on as she slipped to 41st with a time of 21:18. Senior Rebekah Winterton was the second Ute to cross the line in a time of 21:25 for 49th place.
Sophomore Jessica Sams was the third Ute to finish in a time of 21:27 for 53rd. Rounding out the top five runners for Utah were Shaylen Crook in 51st (21:29) and Hannah McInturff in 61st (21:36).
"I thought our kids in the middle of the race really fought valiantly," Kepler said. "Jessica Sams probably ran the best race of her career today and Shaylen Crook was right behind her. Our three, four and five runners definitely all ran solid races."
Other noticeable finishes for the Utes include: Nikki Rietz (88th), Lauren Mills (90th), Andrea Chavez (91st), Dana Snell (98th) and Dakota Grossman (100th).
The Utes finished the day ninth overall in the team standings with 241 points. The overall winner was Oregon with 54 points followed by Stanford (74 points), Colorado (82 points), and Washington (93 points), The full team scoring can be found at the bottom of the article.
