LOS ANGELES - The 59th-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (7-4, 1-2 Pac-12) fell to fifth-ranked UCLA (10-2, 1-0 Pac-12) Friday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Junior Sarah Pham captured the Utes' point in a singles upset at the No. 2 position.

Despite dropping the doubles point in two matches, junior Elena Najera-Salas and sophomore Natasha Smtih managed an 8-5 upset over No. 28 Pamela Montez and Courtney Dolehide at the No. 2 spot.

At the third slot, Pham and junior Callie Craig suffered an 8-1 loss to Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips. The Bruins then captured the doubles point when 21st-ranked junior Paige Miles and sophomore Tereza Bekerova dropped an 8-6 decision to No. 12 Skylar Morton and Robin Anderson at the No. 1 position.

In singles action, No. 70 Bekerova was bested by No. 5 Robin Anderson, 6-1, 6-0, at the top spot, while Smith fell by an identical score to No. 95 Chanelle Van Nguyen at the No. 4 spot, putting UCLA up 3-0.

The match was then decided for the Bruins at 4-0 when junior Lucia Kovarcikova dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to No. 85 Catherine Harrison at the No. 5 slot. The score then became 5-0 when Miles fell to Dolehide at the sixth spot, 6-0, 6-4.

Pham then posted Utah's point at the No. 2 position, upsetting No. 86 Montez in a three-set thriller, 5-7, 6-2, (10-8). Despite capturing the first set, 5-7, Craig was unable to secure the next two sets to upset No. 58 McPhillips, falling 6-2, (10-3) at the No. 3 slot.

The Utes return to action Saturday against No. 7 USC at Marks Stadium at 1 p.m. MT.
