SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team remained dominant throughout the Utah Intercollegiate Tournament to capture championship singles titles in the red and black draws, as well as Group B of the doubles draw Saturday at Coach Mike's Tennis Academy.
The Utes defeated opponents from BYU to capture titles in the Red Draw. Second-seeded and No. 84 junior Slim Hamza, who went undefeated in the tournament, bested Francis Sargeant in the finals, 6-4, 6-4, to clinch the championship title. Senior Ben Tasevac beat out Andrey Goryachkov, 6-3, 7-6(3) to take third place.
Utah also dominated the Black Draw all the way into the finals, where senior and first-seeded Devin Lane and second-seeded senior captain Alejandro Medinilla battled for the singles title. Medinilla emerged victorious with the title, 7-6(8), 7-5.
In doubles action, Medinilla and Tasevac won Group B by beating Matt Pearce and Jeremy Bourgeois of BYU, 8-7(4). The Utes started the match off slow, losing their first service game, but battled their way back into the match and found a way to win in the tiebreaker.
Hamza and Lane were not so fortunate in Group A, losing on the final day to finish second in the group. Juniors Cameron Lee and Cedric Willems finished third after vanquishing BYU's Jacob Sullivan Sterling Galli, 8-3.
The Utes are back in action next week when they travel to Las Vegas, Nev., for the 2013 ITA Regional Championships.
