USAFA, Colo. - The first day of the Air Force Diving Invitational at Cadet Natatorium was wildly successful for the University of Utah diving team. With six divers competing in three events today, the Utes pulled in six top-five finishes.
Utah newcomer Josiah Purss was victorious over 25 other divers as he was crowned the 3-meter winner (363.90). His teammates were not far behind as the Utes took four out of the top five spots in the event. Nelson Foo snagged third (317.25), Caleb Herrick was fourth (314.10) and Brandon Stoppelmoor was fifth (312.75). Jacob Crayne rounded out the Utes' performance with an 11th-place finish (272.65).
After leading the pack in the 1-meter preliminary round with 289.75 points, Kersten Merry was edged out by Northern Arizona University's Kristy Ardavanis to land in second out of a pool of 47 divers (278.75).
Merry continued her success into the afternoon, scoring 225.50 points on the platform and finishing third.
Action resumes tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the men's 1-meter, the women's 3-meter and the men's platform.
