SALT LAKE CITY - The 59th-ranked Universtiy of Utah men's tennis team (7-2) netted a 7-0 shutout of Seattle University (3-9) Thursday at the Eccles Tennis Center. After Utah earned the doubles point, freshman Slim Hamza clinched the match at 4-0 for the Utes from the No. 3 position.
Three Utes improved to an 8-1 singles dual-match record, including junior Dmytro Mamedov, sophomore Devin Lane, and Hamza, while the team improved to an overall 41-13 record, a 75.9 winning percentage. The doubles pair of Lane and Hamza also extended their undefeated record to 7-0.
Utah started off dominant in doubles, earning the point in two matches. Hamza and Lane first downed Flavio Malagutti and Tom Plunkett, 8-3, from the No. 3 position.
Senior Benito Suriano and Mamedov then defeated Mark Shkrebtan and Simon Meske, 8-4, at the top spot to earn the doubles point. Sophomore Alejandro Medinilla and freshman Ace Matias then topped Kevin Lynch and Jason Bediones at the No. 2 slot, 8-5.
In singles matches, Matias quickly put the Utes up 2-0 with a 6-1,6-1 victory over Yusuke Kanehira at the No. 5 position. Mamedov then made the score 3-0 when he downed Shkrebtan, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot.
Hamza then bested Lynch at the No. 3 slot, 6-0,6-2, to clinch the match for the Utes at 4-0. Freshman Rafael Davidian then extended Utah's victory to 5-0 when he defeated Kyle Rapp, 6-3, 6-0 at the sixth spot.
Lane then topped Malagutti at the No. 4 position, 6-3, 6-2, setting up Suriano to complete the sweep at 7-0 with his 6-1, 6-1 victory over Meske at the No. 2 spot.
Catch the No. 59 Utes back in action Saturday against No. 35 Boise State at 5 p.m., at the Eccles Tennis Center.
