SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah women's cross country team has earned 2011 Division l All-Academic status, it was announced by the U.S Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Monday. At the conclusion of the 2011 fall semester, Utah cross country student-athletes earned a combined GPA of 3.216.
"The USTFCCCA All-Academic award is a goal of both our teams (cross country and track and field) each year," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "Our current teams have a new challenge with joining a new conference. The cross country team handled the change well and was able to perform at a high level academically. I am proud of the commitment our team has of being student-athletes. They help one another and push each other to do as well as possible, which is all you can really ask for."
Among the top-performers in the classroom were senior Alyssa Abbott and freshman Nicole Rietz. Both of whom earned a 4.0 GPA.
A total of 205 teams throughout the nation earned the honor. To be eligible for this honor, a team must have achieved a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better and have had at least five runners start at their respective NCAA regional championship meets.
