SALT LAKE CITY- University of Utah senior Amanda Mergaert and sophomore Giselle Slotboom earned All-Region honoree accolades, the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced recently.
At the 2012 Mountain Regional meet, Mergaert's fourth-place finish and Slotboom's 12th-place performance propelled the Utes to a sixth-place finish, which is the second-best in school history.
"This is a well-deserved honor for both Amanda and Giselle," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "For Amanda, it is her third consecutive all-region honor and third consecutive top-10 finish in one of the best regions in the country, all firsts at the University of Utah. Giselle was an all-region selection (21st place) in the south region last year as a freshman at Jacksonville State. To move to a new region and place nine spots higher is outstanding. Both ran terrific races and had outstanding seasons."
To qualify for the honor, athletes must finish in the top-25 individually at one of the nine regional sites.
