TULSA, Okla. - The University of Utah men's tennis team returned to action for the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships Thursday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Sophomore Slim Hamza captured two consecutive singles victories in the first and second rounds, marking the first main-draw wins for the Utes at the ITA All-American Championships since at least 1985. Hamza is slated to take on Alex Domijan of Virginia, Friday in the third round.
"Slim played very well," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "He was a little nervous the first match, but he played very well. He battled and we are excited to see how he will do tomorrow. He is representing our program well."
Hamza secured a 7-5, 6-4 victory in the first round over Spencer Wolf of Northwestern. He then advanced to the second round where he topped Hernus Pieters of Georgia, 6-4, 6-2. Fellow Ute senior Dmytro Mamedov fell in the first round of the main draw to Virginia's Mac Styslinger, 6-4, 6-3.
