SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (2-0) earned a 5-2 victory over the Montana Griz Saturday at the Eccles Tennis Center. Senior Benito Suriano netted the match clinching point for the Utes, topping Carl Kuschke 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot.

"It is good to get another match and another win under our belts today," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "Montana played a tough match. I am disappointed in the way we played our doubles matches today. For another team to come into our house and be more energized than we are is unacceptable. We talked about it during the intermission and I am very proud the way this team responded and took care of business in the singles matches."

After dropping the doubles point, the Utes came out strong in singles. Freshman Ace Matias tied the score at 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No. 4 singles position over Mike Facey. Sophomore Devin Lane made the score 2-1 in favor of Utah when he topped Andreas Luczak, 6-1, 6-0, at the sixth slot.

Freshman Slim Hamza extended the Utes' lead to 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot over Andrew Warren. Sophomore Ben Tasevac then dropped a 7-6(4), 6-3 decision to Ethan Vaughn at the No. 5 position, making the score 3-2.

Suriano secured the win for Utah at 4-1 from the the No. 1 spot. Junior Dmytro Mamedov then extended the Utes' victory to 5-2 when he topped Mikolaj Caruk at the second slot, 6-4, 6-2.

In doubles play, Suriano and Hamza topped Facey and Vaugh, 9-8(4)at the No. 2 position. Tasevac and Lane then suffered a tight 9-8(5) loss to Ben DeMarois and Kuschke at the third spot. The Griz then earned the doubles point when sophomore Alejandro Medinilla and Matias dropped a 9-7 decision to Caruk and Warren.

Catch the Utes back in action in a double header Saturday, Feb. 4, when they host Montana State at 12 p.m., followed by Idaho State at 5 p.m., at the Eccles Tennis Center.
