NEW ORLEANS - Alyssa Abbott, Angela Kaplar and Amanda Mergaert of the University of Utah track & field team were named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team, the organization announced Thursday.
"These three embrace their roles as student athletes each and every day," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "Their efforts in the classroom and in their sport exemplify what our program is all about. This honor is well deserved."
Abbott was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII Track and Field and Cross Country First Team for the fourth consecutive year. Abbott completed her undergraduate studies with a 3.89 GPA while obtaining a degree in Exercise and Sport Science.
Kaplar posted a school-record performance in the 100m hurdles at the BYU Twilight. She clocked a time of 13.61, which beat her previous school-record by over .02 seconds, and earned second place in the event to qualify for the first-round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The rising junior from Alpine, Utah, is a pre-nursing major.
Mergaert earned All-American Second Team honors for the first time in her career after turning in a 1,500m time of 4:19.96 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which was 1.4 seconds shy of qualifying for the final round. The rising junior from Shelby Township, Mich., is majoring in Health Sciences.
A total of 663 student-athletes were tapped as USTFCCCA All-Academic honorees.
The Utah cross country team begins training for the 2011 season on Aug. 16 and its first competition will be Saturday, Sept. 3, at the Utah State Open.
