SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Utah men's tennis team (6-11, 0-2 MWC) was defeated by San Diego State (4-13, 2-3 MWC) Thursday by a score of 6-1 at the Aztec Tennis Center. Junior Benito Suriano netted Utah's solo point with a 6-4, 7-6(6) victory over Javier Plugar at the No. 2 singles position.

"I think it was a much closer match than the score indicates," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "Our guys competed very well today. We could have won the match, but things just didn't go our way."

In doubles play, freshmen Matt Cowley and Devin Lane fell to Andre Feliz and Shiva Sangwan, 8-5. SDSU clinched the doubles point when sophomore Dmytro Mamedov and freshman Garrett LaBarre were defeated by Plugar and Tim Schulz van Endert. At the top spot, Suriano and freshman Alejandro Medinilla suffered a hard-fought 8-6 loss to Giovanni Vaglietti and Hunter Nicholas.

The Aztecs extended their lead with three consecutive wins at the Nos. 3,6, and 4 spots. Lane dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Schulz van Endert, while freshman Ben Tasevac was defeated by Jose Sierra Short. SDSU clinched the match at 4-0 when Cowley was overcome by Nicholas, 6-3, 7-5.

Mamedov made a valiant effort at the No. 1 slot, forcing his match into three sets after dropping the first 7-5, and rallying back to top Vaglietti, 6-2, in the second. Mamedov ultimately came up short and dropped the third set, 10-5, making the score 5-0 in favor of San Diego State.

Suriano made the score 5-1 with a victory over Plugar at the second slot, while Medinilla fell to Feliz 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, making the final score 6-1.

The Utes look to Saturday when they return to action in Las Vegas, Nev., against No.52-ranked UNLV. The match will take place at the Fertitta Tennis Complex at 10 a.m. PT.
