LARAMIE, Wyo.- The second-seeded University of Utah women's tennis team (16-9) claimed the 2011 Mountain West Conference Tournament Championship title with a 4-1 victory over fourth-seeded TCU (13-11) in the final match, Saturday. Senior Evgenia Kryuchkova clinched the Utes' first MWC tournament crown with her 7-6, 6-2, win over Olivia Smith at the No. 2 position.
"We were lead in the match today by our top three players, they all played some incredible tennis," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "I think it's fitting that our senior Evgenia clinched it for us."
This is the second consecutive conference title for the Utes, as they captured the 2010 regular season championship with a perfect 8-0 record in MWC play. By winning the 2011 tournament crown, Utah earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, beginning May 13-15 with the first and second rounds.
In doubles play, the All-MWC team of junior Anastasia Putilina and sophomore Paige Miles downed Katariina Tuohimaa and Maria Babanova at the No. 1 spot, 8-2. The pair of Kryuchkova and redshirt sophomore Lexi Provancha then dropped a close 8-6 decision to Smith and Federica Denti at the No. 2 position, evening up the doubles count.
The freshman duo of Sarah Pham and Lucia Kovarcikova topped Idunn Hertzberg and Gaby Mastromarino at the No. 3 spot, 8-6, to capture the doubles point and give Utah a 1-0 lead.
In singles play, Kovarcikova dropped a 6-1, 6-1, decision to Denti at the No. 4 spot to even up the score at 1-1. All-MWC singles selection Pham notched her 12th straight win when she downed Mastromarino 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot to put the Utes up 2-1.
At the top spot, 89th-ranked Putilina, the MWC Player of the Year, netted her seventh consecutive singles victory when she defeated Tuohimaa, 6-2, 6-3, to give Utah a 3-1 lead.
Kryuchkova then earned the match-clinching point from the No. 2 spot. The Utah senior was named all-MWC for singles in 2011 for the third time in her career.
With the match decided, the remaining singles matches were halted. Miles was up in her second set after winning the first, while Provancha was ahead in her first.
The selection announcements for the 2011 NCAA Division I women's tennis tournament will be made at 3 p.m. MT, Tuesday, May 3, on www.NCAA.com . A link will be available on the NCAA.com's women's tennis page.
