SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (7-14, 1-5 MWC) heads to Fort Collins, Colo., for the Mountain West Conference Championship, April 27-30. The sixth-seeded Utes will take on third-seeded New Mexico (14-9, 4-2 MWC) Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
In their regular season meeting against New Mexico, the Utes fell to 54th-ranked New Mexico at the Liberty Park Tennis Center by a score of 5-2. Freshman Ben Tasevac battled Joe Wood at the No. 6 spot for a 6-4, 5-7, 10-6 victory, while junior Benito Suriano netted a 6-2, 6-4 victory from the No. 2 position over Ben Dunbar.
If the Utes advance past New Mexico, they will then face the winner of the match between the second-seeded TCU and seventh-seeded Air Force in the semifinals Friday at 2 p.m. The championship match will be played Saturday at 2 p.m.
In their regular season meeting against No. 74 TCU, Utah fell 7-0, at home. Against Air Force, the Utes recorded a 7-0 shutout of the Falcons, also at home.
Last Time at MWC Championships The fifth-seeded Utes fell to fourth-seeded TCU, 4-2, in the quarterfinal round at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, Nev. After being swept in doubles, Alex Golding and Stephen Jacobs earned the Utes' two points. Golding topped Marius Cirstea, 6-4, 6-4, while Jacobs defeated Paul Chappell, 6-4, 6-4. The match at the No. 5 position went unfinished, making the score 4-2 in favor of the Horned Frogs.
