SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (7-13, 1-4 MWC) is slated to take on No. 36 BYU in Provo, Utah, Saturday at 1 p.m., in their last regular season match of the year.
Leading the Cougars are Partick Kawka, who is 28-8 overall in singles, Georgy Batrakov , who currently holds a 17-match winning streak , and Thomas Shubert, who is 12-1 in doubles with Batrakov.
The Utes are coming off a split weekend that included a 7-0 shutout over Air Force and a 5-2 loss to No. 54-ranked New Mexico. Sophomore Dmytro Mamedov clinched the match against the Falcons from the No. 2 spot, topping Andy Jackson, 6-4, 6-2.
Junior Benito Suriano went 2-0 for the weekend, improving his conference record to 3-2. Suriano netted a 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 10-8 victory over Lance Wilhelm of Air Force at the top spot Friday, and downed Ben Dunbar of New Mexico, 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 2 position.
Freshman Ben Tasevac also went 2-0 for the weekend at the No. 6 slot, capturing a 5-7, 6-3, 10-3 victory over Air Force's Alex Beaussart and topping Joe Wood of New Mexico, 6-4, 5-7, 10-6.
Last Time vs BYU
The Utes dropped a 6-1 decision to the 33rd-ranked Cougars at the Liberty Park Tennis Center. Phillip Eilers earned Utah's solo point from the top spot, topping Thomas Shubert, 3-6, 7-6(6), 6-3. Although BYU earned the doubles point, Stephen Jacobs and Benito Suriano earned a hard fought 9-7 victory from the No. 3 doubles position over Spencer Smith and Evan Urbina.
