SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (6-12, 0-3 MWC) will host a pair of matches this weekend, beginning with Air Force (10-9, 0-3 MWC) Friday, followed by 53rd-ranked New Mexico (12-7, 2-0 MWC) Saturday. Both matches will be played at the Eccles Tennis Center at 1 p.m. MT.
Utah and Air Force are both fighting to capture their first MWC victory of the season. The Falcons' top performer is Alex Grubbs, currently holding an 11-8 dual match record and going 8-6 at the No. 4 position. AF's second-best contender is Lance Wilhelm with a 10-8 record at the top position. Wilhelm teams up with Andy Jackson in doubles for an 8-6 dual match record from the No. 1 spot.
New Mexico is undefeated in conference play. However they have yet to win a road match this season, going 0-2. The Lobos are fresh off a 5-2 victory of San Diego State, and will face BYU before coming to Salt Lake. Their best singles player is Jadon Phillips, who is 11-6 at the top slot and 12-6 overall. Conor Berg also presents a threat, with a 12-7 record and 7-4 from the No. 5 spot. Phillips and Phillip Anderson are ranked 79th nationally. The duo is 12-5 overall and currently owns a three-match winning streak.
Utah has performed well at home this year and hopes the home court advantage can help deliver its first conference win of 2011.
Last Time vs Air Force The Utes topped the Falcons, 5-2, on the road. Timmy Allin clinched the match for the Utes at the No. 5 position, dominating Vinni Lodola, 6-3, 6-1. Utah began went into singles with a 1-0 advantage after earning the doubles point. Phillip Eilers and Alex Golding downed Brett Rodgers and Taylor Soster, 8-5 at the top slot, followed by an 8-4 victory from Benito Suriano and Stephen Jacobs over Alex Beaussart and Sam Barnes at the No. 3 position.
In singles play, Eilers topped Wilhelm, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot, putting Utah up 2-0. Golding extended the lead to 3-0, dominating Rodgers, 6-1, 6-1.
The Falcons then saw their two points when Suriano was defeated by Soster, 6-4, 7-5, at the No. 3 slot and Jacob Smits fell to Austin Francis, 7-5, 2-6, 7-5, at the No. 2 position.
Allin then earned the match clinching point at 4-0 with his victory, while Jacobs made the score 5-2, topping Beaussart, 7-5, 6-1, at the sixth spot.
Last Time vs. New Mexico Utah fell to New Mexico 5-2 in their conference opener. After dropping the doubles point, Eilers and Golding earned the Utes' two points from the Nos. 1 and 5 singles positions. The Lobos captured wins from the Nos. 2, 3, 4, and 6 spots. Smits was defeated by Carl Ho, 7-6, 6-2, followed by Suriano's 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 loss to Phillips. Allin was then overcome by Anderson, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. The final score became 5-2 when Jacobs suffered a 6-4, 7-6 loss to Berg.
