SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (6-6) dropped a 4-3 decision to Pacific (6-6) Friday in the Eccles Tennis Center. After earning the doubles point, the Utes battled hard in singles, but struggled to come up with a win.

In doubles play, Utah freshman duo Matt Cowley and Devin Lane topped Ivan Castro and Dugan, 8-6, at the second spot. Junior Benito Suriano teamed up with freshman Alejandro Medinilla at the No. 1 slot to clinch the doubles point with an 8-4 victory over Fernando Ristow and Alex Golding. With the Utes already holding a 1-0 lead, sophomore Dmytro Mamedov and freshman Gino Octa fell, 8-4, to Tomasz Krzyszkowski and Artem Gramma at the No. 3 position.

Lane was the first Ute to finish in singles, downing Ristow, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 4 singles spot, putting Utah up 2-0. Pacific saw their first point when Mamedov was defeated by Gramma at the No. 2 position by a score of 6-2, 6-4.

Medinilla then fell to Castro, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 3 slot, tying the score at two apiece. Suriano then dropped a 6-3, 7-6(3) decision to Krzyszkowski at the top spot, putting Pacific up 3-2.

Making his collegiate debut, playing in the No. 6 position, freshman Ben Tasevac gave a solid effort, rallying for a 6-1 victory in his second set after dropping the first, 6-3, forcing the match into a third set. He ultimately fell in a third set tie breaker, 7-6(4), to Lance Dugan, to give the Tigers their match clinching point.

Cowley battled for a tight 6-4, 7-6(8) victory over Alex Golding at the fifth spot, making the final score 4-3 in favor of Pacific.

The Utes now head to San Diego, Calif., where they will take on two ranked opponents, #71 Dartmouth on Thursday and #20 San Diego on Friday. Utah will close out the road trip on when they take on Loyola Marymount Saturday.
