SALT LAKE CITY - Junior guard Chris Hines led the way with 12 points, but the University of Utah men's basketball team lost to Cal State Fullerton, 81-50, Wednesday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Utah (1-7) had three double-digit scorers, led by Hines, who connected on four of nine 3-point field goal attempts for all 12 of his points.
The Utes committed a season-low seven turnovers. Their previous best mark this year was 13 against Montana State on Nov. 19. Defensively, Utah forced Cal State Fullerton to turn the ball over 14 times.
Junior center Jason Washburn hit double digits in points for the fourth straight time as he poured in 11 to go with a team-high seven rebounds. Washburn made five of his six shots from the free throw line.
Kareem Storey made his first career start at point guard for the Utes and came within a basket of his career high with 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the floor. Storey tied his career high with three rebounds for the third time this season. He also came within one assist of tying his career high as he dished out six helpers.
Cal State Fullerton connected on its first four shots, all 3-point field goals, and jumped out to a 14-0 lead. Hines broke Utah's opening drought with a 3-point basket at the 16:52 mark then a pair of free throws by Storey brought the Utes within nine (14-5). The Utes cut their deficit to seven points (26-19) after going on a 5-0 run. Unfortunately, the Titans ended the half on a 12-3 run to take a 43-26 advantage into the break. Storey and Washburn led the Ute offense with eight points apiece.
The Utes connected on three of their first four shots in the second half and scored seven of the first nine points in the frame to make it 45-33. Unfortunately, Cal State Fullerton led by no fewer than 12 the rest of the way as it secured an 81-50 victory.
Cal State Fullerton (5-3) was led by a game-high 18 points from Kwame Vaughn, while DJ Seeley added 17. Andre Hardy was the third Titan with double-digit-points (11).
The Utes host in-state rival BYU in a Deseret First Duel game Saturday at 12 p.m., in the Huntsman Center. The matchup with the Cougars will be televised live on Fox Sports Net.
