Pham Captures Singles Crown at Utah Invitational

SALT LAKE CITY- Sophomore Sarah Pham of the University of Utah women's tennis team captured the singles-A draw crown Sunday, at the 2011 Utah Invitational in Salt Lake City. The Ute upset 52nd-ranked Whitney Wolf of LSU 3-6, 6-4, 6-0, in the finals for the win.
In additional singles play, sophomore Lucia Kovarcikova notched a 6-3, 6-4, win over LSU's Yvette Vlaar, while freshman Danielle Flores fell to Olivia Howlett of LSU 6-3, 6-4.
In the doubles finals, the duo of Flores and freshman Natasha Smith dropped a close 9-8(5) decision to LSU's Wolf and Keri Frankenberger. In additional doubles play, the Utah tandem of Pham and Kovarcikova fell to Howlett and Vlaar of LSU 8-5.
In other women's tennis action, senior Anastasia Putilina defeated Brittany Wowchuck of Northwestern 6-2, 7-6(2), at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. Sophomore Callie Craig dropped a 6-4, 6-3 to San Diego's Stephanie Hoffpauir Sunday, after downing Anna Livadaru of Northwestern 6-2, 6-2, Saturday.
In doubles play, the Ute duo dropped an 8-2 decision to Fidan Manashirova and Gabby Steele of Ohio State.
