"This meet is by far the most competitive meet that was held this weekend as it had almost every major school in our Zone plus a few extras. It allowed us to see where we need to be in order to qualify for nationals at our NCAA Zone regional meet in March." Stated Diving Coach Richard Marschner.
The competition started a bit slowly for the Utes on Thursday as Nelson Foo had the best performance by placing 21st on the 1 meter board.
Friday the team stepped up considerably and was highlighted by a couple of seventh-place finishes by Nelson Foo and Ellis Walters. Foo qualified for finals by placing sixth in the men's 3 meter preliminaries with a season best score of 325.95. Walters qualified seventh in the 1 meter preliminaries with a score of 262.25 and held her position in a final round that included four NCAA qualifiers.
Coach Marschner was pleased with the meet saying, "I was really happy with how our team rebounded from a disappointing start to the meet. It's not easy to come back against competition as tough as this after a let-down on the first day. It showed great character on our part."
The final day of the competition saw the Utes finish with a couple top-10 performances by Foo and Brandon Stoppelmoor in the men's platform event. Foo had a strong showing by narrowly missing out on a podium finish ending up fourth with a score of 272.35 while Stoppelmoor turned in a lifetime best score of 243.30 to finish 10th.
Nelson Foo came away feeling good about team's efforts as well, "I am very confident that we can perform well both at PAC-12's and at NCAA Zones later on in the season. This meet gives me the confidence to compete against the best."
