The Match:The University of Utah volleyball team takes on Washington State tonight at Crimson Court. First serve is set for 7 p.m. MT.
Utah is 9-20 overall this season and 4-16 against Pac-12 Conference opponents after suffering a three-set loss to 10th-ranked Washington last night.
Washington Match Recap: Utah dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 10 Washington last night (25-18, 27-25, 28-26). The Utes managed a .234 clip in hitting percentage, but yielded a .280 mark to the Huskies.
Freshman outside hitter Chelsey Schofield anchored the Ute attack with 11 kills for her 14th double-digit-kill match of the year. She also turned in nine digs to help Utah on defense and finished just one dig short of her eighth career double-double.
Shelby Dalton contributed eight kills on 16 swings with only three errors for a .312 hitting percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Morgan Odale also had eight kills and a team-high 10 digs. She has had 10 or more digs in four straight matches and has registered 13 double-digit-dig performances on the year and 24 over her career. Junior setter Abby Simmons distributed 33 assists to go with eight digs.
Close Calls: Seven of Utah's last 11 sets against Pac-12 opponents have been decided by the minimum two points. All three of the Utes' sets at Arizona last Friday were of the 25-23 variety before losing the first set at Arizona State (28-26) and the fifth (15-13) last Saturday. Lastly, the second and third sets last night against the Huskies were determined by 27-25, 28-26 scores.
Blistering on the Block: Utah outblocked Washington, the top blocking team in the country entering the match, by a 13.0 to 7. 5 margin. Senior middle blocker Danielle Killpack registered 10 blocks for her second consecutive double-figure-block match with 10 block assists against the Huskies.
The Utes started the week fifth in the NCAA and third in the Pac-12 in the team blocking rankings with 3.07 blocks per set overall and 2.98 per set in league competition. Killpack took over team-high honors after last night's match with a 1.38 block-per-set average, while Erin Redd owns a 1.37 mark.
