TEMPE - Freshman outside hitter Chelsey Schofield set career highs in kills and senior middle Danielle Killpack tied her career high in blocks, but the University of Utah fell in a five-set decision at Arizona State, 3-2 (28-26, 22-25, 19-25, 25-17, 15-13), in a Pac-12 Conference match Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena.
Utah (9-19, 4-15 Pac-12) held a .156 to .137 advantage in team hitting percentage over Arizona State. The Utes outblocked the Sun Devils, 17.0 to 8.5, the 21st time that Utah has outblocked its opponents this season.
Schofield pounded a career-high 21 kills on a career-high mark of 60 attempts. Defensively, Schofield tied her season high with 18 digs for her seventh double-double of the year.
Killpack collected 11 blocks to lead the Ute defense at the net, in addition to four kills.
Freshman outside hitter Shelby Dalton was one of three Utes in double figures in kills with 11 on 25 attempts and only three errors for a .320 hitting percentage. She also had six blocks as part of the Utah defense.
Sophomore outside hitter Morgan Odale notched her fifth double-double, and the 14th of her career, as she turned in 17 digs and 11 kills. The Star, Idaho native also contributed four blocks.
Junior setter Abby Simmons dished out a career-high 45 assists, her seventh 20-plus-assist match of the season and second straight.
Defensively, sophomore libero Nikki Sim turned in 21 digs Saturday at Arizona State, her fifth 20-plus-dig match of the season.
ASU took the first three points of the match and led by as many as five (10-5) before Utah came back to take its first lead of the set at 12-11 with a 7-1 run. The set would be tied eight more times (22-22) and Utah found itself down 24-22 then came back to even the set at 24 points apiece. Unfortunately, the Sun Devils took away a 28-26 victory.
There were three ties in the early-going when the Utes used a 5-1 spurt to grab a 10-6 edge. Utah led by as many as five at 17-12 and would not relinquish the lead again en route to a 25-23 second-set victory.
With nine ties highlighting the action in the third, the last coming at 10-10, the Utes then went on an 11-5 spurt to seize a six-point edge at 21-15 and went on to take the set by an identical margin, 25-19.
Utah fell behind 10-5 in the fourth frame and could get no closer than three the rest of the way as ASU even the match at 2-2 with a 25-17 victory.
The fifth and decisive set was knotted at 11, but the Sun Devils were able to close strong with a 4-2 stretch to clinch the match with a 15-13 win.
Arizona State (8-19, 4-14 Pac-12) was led by a match-high 27 kills by Ashley Kastl, while setter Shannan McCready distributed 56 assists and had 14 digs.
The Utes host Washington and Washington State next weekend at Crimson Court. First serve for both matches at 7 p.m. MT and will be live streamed at utahutes.com.
