LAS VEGAS - The University of Utah men's tennis saw its No. 15-seeded doubles team of sophomore Alejandro Medinilla and freshman Ace Matias advance Thursday at the ITA Regionals at the Darling Tennis Center. Two other Ute pairs advanced to the third round of consolation play after suffering losses in the main draw.
Medinilla and Matias topped Idaho's Alan Shin and Cesar Torres, 8-3 in the doubles round of 32. The pair will advance to the round of 16 to face Weber State's Oliver Good and Simon Unger Friday at 9 a.m.
After falling in their round of 32 doubles matches, junior Dmytro Mamedov and sophomore Ben Tasevac advanced to the third round of consolation play. Freshman Justin Archer teamed up with BYU's Dean Ormsby and will also advance. Both teams will face their opponents Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Mamedov and Tasevac downed Idaho State's Andres Coella and Dakota Pate, 8-3, and will take on Nevada-Reno's Moez Charqui and Victor Ouvard. Archer and Ormsby advanced when UNLV's No. 9-seeded Johannes Markel and Bernard Schoeman retired due to injury. The duo will battle Abid Akbar and Jose Bendeck of Idaho.
In the singles play, No. 17- seeded Mamedov put in a solid effort for the Utes. He earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Andrew Whiting of Utah State in the round of 64 and carried the winning momentum into the round of 32, where he defeated No. 10-seeded Patrick Kawka of BYU, 6-4 in the first set, but was unable to clinch the next two sets, and fell 6-3, 6-1.
In other singles competition, Matias was defeated by Denver's No. 15-seeded Jens Vorkefeld in the first set, 6-4. He rallied back to down Vorkefeld in the second set, 6-1, but was unable to take the third and fell, 6-3.
In singles consolation play, Medinilla dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to No. 17-seeded Simon Unger of BYU, while Matias was defeated by No. 9-seeded Marius Cirstea, 6-2, 6-4. Freshman Ben Tasevac also suffered a loss, falling to Mikolaj Caruk of Montana, 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles play, Mamedov and Tasevac were defeated by New Mexico's No. 12- seeded Carl Ho and Connor Berg, 8-3, while Archer and BYU's Dean Ormsby fell to BYU's No. 10- seeded Francis Sargeant and Spencer Smith, 8-1.
