LAS VEGAS - The University of Utah men's tennis team saw two individuals and three doubles pairs advance Wednesday at the ITA Mountain Regional tournament at the Darling Tennis Center.
No. 17-seeded junior Dmytro Mamedov and freshman Ace Matias each won their first round singles matches to advance to the round of 64. Mamedov downed Nate Gross of Idaho State, 6-1, 6-0, while Matias topped Dean Ormsby of BYU, 6-1, 6-1. Mamedov will face Utah State's Andrew Whiting, while Matias takes on Denver's No. 15-seeded Jens Vorkefeld, both at 12 p.m., Thursday.
In doubles competition, three Ute doubles pairs advanced to the round of 32, including the No. 15-seeded team of sophomore Alejandro Medinilla and Matias, as well as Mamedov and freshman Ben Tasevac. Freshman new-comer Justin Archer, who teamed up with BYU's Ormsby, also advanced.
Matias and Medinilla downed Niklas Brandes and Alberto Fuentes of Montana State, 8-2. Mamedov and Tasevac then topped Montana's Ben DeMarois and Andrew Warren, 9-7. Archer and Ormsby teamed up to defeat Eduardo Cabrita and Patick Pfister of New Mexico State, 9-8.
Matias and Medinilla will take on Alan Shin and Cesar Torres of Idaho, while Mamedov and Tasevac face No. 12-seeded Connor Berg and Carl Ho of New Mexico. Archer and Ormsby will compete against BYU's No. 10-seeded Francis Sargeant and Spencer Smith. All doubles matches will be played at 9 a.m., Thursday.
In other first round singles matches, Medinilla fell to Alex Clinkenbeard of Denver, 6-3, 6-2, while Tasevac also suffered a 6-3, 6-2 loss. Tasevac was defeated by BYU's No. 6-seeded Spencer Smith. In his collegiate debut, Archer dropped a 6-1, 6-1, decision to Mitch McDaniel of New Mexico.
In the first round of consolation play, Medinilla earned a 6-3, 6-2, win over Idaho's Clint Vidano, while Tasevac battled Dominic Bermudez of Northern Arizona for a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 victory. Medinilla and Tasevac will take on their next opponents Thursday at 5 p.m.
After falling in the first set of his consolation match, 6-4, Archer rallied and defeated Utah State's Curran Wearmouth in the second set, 6-2, but was not able to clinch the victory and fell in the third set, 6-3.
