SALT LAKE CITY - The Unviersity of Utah men's tennis team wrapped up the 2011 Utah Intercollegiates Saturday at Libery Park Tennis Center. After advancing through singles competition, No. 2-seeded junior Dmytro Mamedov was unable to clinch the title in the final round, falling to BYU's No. 1-seeded Spencer Smith. The Utes also suffered a tough loss in the doubles final.
"Of course I am disappointed we lost both matches today, especially because I believed we played good enough to win both of them," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "But it is a good lesson for our team that little things make big differences. Overall, I am happy the way we performed this tournament as a team. It is good to see that all of our hard work is resulting in significant improvements."
In the singles finals, Mamedov battled in the first set, but suffered a tight 6-7(5) loss. He rallied for a win in the second set, topping Smith 7-5, but was unable to earn a third win, and dropped the final set 6-2.
The duo of Alejandro Medinilla and Ace Matias fell in the doubles finals to Weber State's Simon Unger and Oliver Good, 8-5.
The Utes return to action at the ITA Regional Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., Oct. 19-23.
