SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team advanced three players to the final rounds Friday at Liberty Park Tennis Center. No. 2-seeded junior Dmytro Mamedov looks to reclaim the singles title Saturday when he takes on No. 1-seeded Spencer Smith of BYU. No. 1-seeded freshman Ace Matias and sophomore Alejandro Medinilla will play for the doubles title against Weber State's No. 3-seeded Oliver Good and Simon Unger.
"I am excited for Ace, Alejandro and Dima for reaching the finals in the doubles and singles draw respectively," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "It is a good confidence builder for the team that we are finally back in the finals again and we hope to reclaim both titles in some tough matches tomorrow."
In singles play, Mamedov downed BYU's No. 7-seeded Francis Sargeant in the quarterfinal round, 6-0, 6-1. He then carried the winning momentum to the semifinal round, where he topped David Doehring of BYU, 6-1, 6-3. He will face Smith Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
No. 8-seeded Matias fell to Smith, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarterfinals, while fellow teammate sophomore Ben Tasevac also suffered a loss, dropping a tight 6-4, 6-4 decision to BYU's Travis Fillmore.
In doubles standings, No. 1-seeded Matias and Medinilla clinched an 8-3 victory over Utah State's Marcus Fritz and Fredrik Peterson in the semifinals. The duo will battle Good and Unger at 9:30 a.m.
