SALT LAKE CITY - Three University of Utah men's tennis players advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Utah Intercollegiates Thursday at Liberty Park Tennis Center. One doubles pair also advanced and will play in the doubles semifinals Friday at 9 a.m. The singles quarterfinals will be played at 1 p.m.
"For as banged up as we are, I think having 3 out of 5 players reach the singles quarter finals and one doubles team in the semifinals is a positive start to our season," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "We showed today that we have come a long way since last year and that we have improved significantly. We are looking forward to more good tennis tomorrow."
In singles standings, No. 8-seeded freshman Ace Matias downed Weber State's Dylan Hansel in the round of 32, 6-0, 6-0, followed by a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Peter Ramstromer-Pello, also of WSU, in the round of 16. He will take on No. 1-seeded Spencer Smith of BYU Friday in the quarterfinals.
