SALT LAKE CITY - After taking last week off from competition, the University of Utah women's cross country team will hit the road this Saturday to compete at the Chile Pepper Invitational at the University of Arkansas Cross Country Course in Fayetteville, Ark. The six-kilometer race is slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. CDT.
"Our workouts over the last three weeks have gone very well," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "We have a few injuries that we need to be cautious with, but other than that, everyone is running well. We have a good chance to finish in the top five at this meet if we can improve our 5-9 runners."
Returning to the lineup this Saturday will be Utah's top runners, Amanda Mergaert and Alyssa Abbott. Both posted top-15 finishes at the Stanford Invitational on Sept. 24 and will lead the way for the Utes with experience and leadership.
Battling for the third thru fifth spots will be Rebekah Winterton , Susannah Hurst, and Hilary Troutner. With a field of tough competition, the Utes will need solid performances from these three runners to finish in the top five of the team standings.
"We have focused on running more as a group with our 3-5 spots, especially later in the workouts when people are tired," Kepler said. "After watching practice the last three weeks, I feel like that is more of a mental issue than a physical one."
The Chile Pepper Invitational will provide elite competition with #11 Arkansas, #17 Texas, and #23 Iowa slated to compete. The Utes will also have the chance to earn points that could help them gain an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships in November.
