Pham Advances to Third Round of All-American Prequalifiers

LOS ANGELES, Calif.- Sarah Pham of the University of Utah women's tennis team advanced through the first two rounds of prequalifying singles play at the 2011 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships Saturday, in Los Angeles, Calif.
"Sarah is playing like a top-100 player and we need her to do that," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "I am so pleased."
Pham upset 79th-ranked Elizabeth Ullathorne of Texas Tech 6-2, 6-1, in the first round before downing Elizabeth Kilborn of Georgia Tech 6-0, 6-1, in the second. The Utah sophomore faces 110th-ranked Lauren Mira of Vanderbilt in the third round Sunday, at noon PT.
In other Utah women's tennis action Saturday, senior Anastasia Putilina, ranked No. 64, and junior Paige Miles both advanced to the Sunday finals of their respective singles brackets at the SDSU Fall Classic in San Diego, Calif. The freshman duo of Danielle Flores and Natasha Smith advanced to the finals of their doubles bracket.
"Anastasia and Paige played well today advancing to the finals of their brackets," said assistant coach Ruth Ann Allen. "They played focused and experience while the rest of the team fought hard but lacked the same focus. Danielle and Natasha were a bright spot in doubles. They play aggressively and energetically which is exactly what Utah needs."
In singles blue bracket play, Putilina downed Houston's Maja Kazimieruk 6-0, 6-2 to advance to Sunday's finals where she takes on Monica Turewicz of Duke.
In the gold bracket semifinals Miles blanked Lorraine Cheung of Cal State Northridge 6-0, 6-0. The Ute duo faces San Diego's Anna Yang in the finals Sunday.
In red bracket doubles play, Flores and Smith defeated Annemieke Witte and Ros-Polly Nguyen of New Mexico State, 8-2. The Utah tandem will take on Cara Brown and Idil Haciraifoglu of San Diego in Sunday's finals.
