SAN DIEGO - The Utah women's basketball team rebounded from a second-half struggle to defeat San Diego State in overtime, 70-67, on Saturday afternoon in Viejas Arena.
Iwalani Rodrigues scored 27 points to lead the Utes, her fifth 20-plus point game this season. Michelle Plouffe scored 18 points with a team-high 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Janita Badon was also in double-figure scoring with 15 points.
"I am really proud of our team tonight," interim head coach Anthony Levrets said. "Not just because we won, but because we played great in the first half, battled in the second half, and executed down the stretch. This win really shows the growth of our team."
The game featured large momentum swings for each team throughout the course of the contest.
Going down 11-0 in the first 4:30 of the game, the Utes rebounded from their disastrous start with an 8-0 run to get right back in the game. Rodrigues had six of the eight points of the early run for the Utes.
Down by four, 17-13 with 10 minutes left in the first half, Utah took control with a 12-0 run through the next 4:30, taking a 25-17 lead. Rodrigues gave the Utes their first lead of the game with a three-pointer to put the score at 18-17, and she also capped the run with a three.
Although SDSU was able to come within four points in the final minutes, Utah ended the first half on a 7-0 run to lead 39-27 at halftime. Badon capped the first-half scoring with a three in the final seconds. Rodrigues had 19 points at halftime.
Utah struggled on offense out of the locker room, scoring just four points through the first 10 minutes of the second half while shooting 11-percent from the floor. The Aztecs took advantage of the drought, scoring 14 points to cut the Utah lead to 43-41.
San Diego State took its first lead of the second half with a Sajoyia Griffin jumper with 8:26 remaining, 46-45. Rodrigues scored six-straight to put the Utes back on top by five, 51-46 with 5:34 left.
The two teams swapped baskets down the stretch. With Utah leading by one, 56-55, Plouffe was fouled with 38 seconds remaining. She made her first free-throw to give Utah a two-point lead, but missed the second to open the door for SDSU. Despite a Courtney Clements missed three, the Aztecs got the offensive rebound to Jessika Bradley for a layup with 15 seconds left, tying the game at 57-57.
Utah was unable to do anything in the final 10 seconds, pushing the game to overtime.
Bradley started the scoring for SDSU in overtime with a jumper, but Brittany Knighton made the second three of her career on the other end of the floor to give the Utes an advantage. The lead changed hands four times in the extra stanza. A Clements three-pointer with 28 seconds remaining gave San Diego State the advantage, 67-66. After a timeout to review the time on the clock, the Utes took advantage of their possession with Plouffe making a jumper in the paint for the lead with 13 seconds left, 68-67.
SDSU got the ball back with 11 seconds left, and Badon pulled down the rebound on Coco Davis' missed shot. She was immediately fouled with less than a second remaining, and hit both her free throws to put Utah up by three. SDSU was unable to get off a long shot when they received the ball on the inbounds.
Clements led San Diego State with 29 points. Bradley had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Paris Johnson was held to eight points and four rebounds, well below her averages coming into the game of 17.1 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
Utah returns to the court at Brigham Young on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at 7:00 p.m.
