FORT WORTH, Texas - The University of Utah swimming and diving team lost to the TCU Horned Frogs on Saturday at the University Recreation Center Natatorium. The men lost by a score of 171 - 123 while the women lost by a score of 166 - 131.
"We got beat on both sides today but it was a close meet," said head coach Greg Winslow. "From here, we're only going to get better as we get closer to the conference."
Karson Applin and Brent Murray each contributed a win for the Utes in the 100 fly (50.48) and the 200 free (1:42.81), respectively. Both men were also on the winning 400 free relay alongside Bjorn Gunnarsson and Garret Beaman (3:06.31).
Murray and Beaman touched in second (46.55) and third place (47.25), respectively, in the 100 free. Murray also had a runner-up finish in the 50 free (21.21), only eight-hundredths of a second behind TCU's Devin Price. Luke Donohue came in second behind Applin in the 100 fly (52.29), while Ryan Hansen finished second in the 500 free (4:45.17).
Other strong performances by the Ute men include third-place finishes in the 100 and 200 back by Major Robinson (52.98 and 1:53.78), the 100 breast by Applin (58.68), the 200 fly by Eric Bonicelli, and the 200 breast by Garrett Peterson (2:11.35).
On the diving boards, Nelson Foo scored 370.13 to earn first place in the 3-meter dive with Brandon Stoppelmoor earning third with 270.68. Foo also placed second in the 1-meter dive with 298.05 while third place was earned by Michael Glasson (238.50).
Ellis Walters won both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives for the Ute women with scores of 283.50 and 288.75, respectively.
"The women were touched out several times by less than a second so it was a really close meet for them," Winslow said.
The women's 400 medley relay of Traycie Swartz, Samantha Zuch, Sarah Boylen, and Natalie Edge earned the win, touching in a time of 3:51.13. Edge, Hannah Caron, Kristina Evans, and Swartz also finished first in the 400 free relay (3:25.57).
Other wins for the Ute women include the 100 free by Edge (50.91), the 100 back by Swartz (57.37), and the 100 fly by Caron (55.25). A few of the runner-up performances include Edge in the 50 free (23.66), Zuch in the 1000 free (10:33.29), Caron in the 200 fly (2:02.82), Danielle Caldwell in the 200 back (2:07.17), and Maiya Otsuka in the 200 breast (2:24.12).
There were some close near-wins between the Ute women and TCU with Nicole Ligeza finishing a very close second in the 100 breast finishing only one-hundredth of a second behind TCU's Michelle Fleming (1:07.75). Caron also finished only four-hundredths of a second behind Maria Alvarez to take second place in the 200 free (1:51.68).
"We learned a lot and we're right where we need to be to have a good championship season." Winslow said. "We are excited for what our future holds."
Up next for the Utah swimming and diving team are home meets against Wyoming on Friday, Jan. 21 at 5 p.m. and against Air Force on Saturday, Jan. 22 at Ute Natatorium.
