Dear Tennis Friends,
Hopefully all of you have enjoyed a great summer filled with good tennis. As the 2010 US Open starts, so has the 2010/2011 school year and the college tennis season. Unfortunately, Phillip Eilers didn't qualify for the main draw at the US Open so we will have to wait to see him at that level for a little while longer. After talking to him the last few weeks, it is our understanding that he is going pro, so we will keep you posted on his advancements on the tour as well.
Of course, the summer for us was all about the upcoming switch to the conference of champions: the PAC-10. Not only is the Pac-10 the best overall conference in the country for all sports, nearly doubling the national championships of the 2nd best conference, but it is also by far the best conference in men's tennis. The Pac-10 has won 51 of 64 NCAA team titles and has hosted players such as Arthur Ashe, Jimmy Connors (UCLA), Bob Lutz, Stan Smith, Cecil Mamiit (USC), John McNroe, Patrick McNroe, the Bryan brothers (all Stanford) and many more. Six schools in the new Pac-12 have won national championships since 1883 and with Greg Holmes' 1983 singles NCAA title we are proud to be one of those 6 schools.
Our last year in the Mountain West Conference will be a year full of young new faces as we have 6 freshman, 1 sophomore and 1 junior on the team. We are extremely excited to start working with these 8 young men and we hope to add one or two players for the spring semester.
Matt Cowley:
A freshman from Salt Lake City, UT, Matt is the grandson of former Ute great Joe Cowley. Matt is a very offensive minded player who we feel will have an immediate impact on the team in both singles and doubles. Matt was the 4A high school state champion in 2009 and is a 4-star recruit.
Devin Lane:
Another freshman from Salt Lake City, UT, Devin is a product of former Ute great and current tennis coach Mike Martines. Devin is a serve & volleyer that will have a huge impact on both singles and doubles. Highly recruited by other national powerhouses, we are delighted to have Devin on our team this year. Devin is another 4-star recruit and the 4A high school state champion in 2007 and 2008.
Brad Weaver:
Brad is a redshirt freshman from Salt Lake City, UT. A walk on last year, Brad's work ethic and positive attitude have earned him a spot on this year's roster yet again. Brad will bring much needed leadership to this young team and we hope to see him shine in the spring semester.
Garrett LaBarre:
Yet another player with ties to Salt Lake City, UT. Although a Canadian national, Garrett's father has worked and lived in Salt Lake for many years. Garrett has trained in the Advantage Tennis Academy and we think he will have an immediate impact on our doubles line up.
Gino Octa:
A freshman from Ontario, Canada, Gino is a top-ranked national player in Canada. We expect great things from Gino in both singles and doubles.
Alejandro Medinilla:
Our last freshman comes to us from Mexico City, Mexico. As a top-ranked junior in Mexico, Alejandro was recruited by many D1 ranked teams and we are very happy to have received his commitment. He is a player with a big upside and has victories over two blue chip recruits: Denis Lin (Stanford) and Garrett Brasseaux (Georgia).
Adding to our freshman group are returning players, Dmytro Mamedov (sophomore - Ukraine) and Benito Suriano (junior - El Salvador).
Of course we would like to wish everyone a lot of football fun and success this upcoming fall, and we hope to receive your support again in order to finish out our last season in the MWC strong.
Thanks and GO UTES!
