COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah sophomore Amanda Mergaert was named the Mountain West Conference Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career, the league office announced Tuesday.
Mergaert, a Shelby Township, Mich., native, finished 18th overall in the 6K event Saturday at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. Mergaert posted a time of 21:19.0 in her first meet of the 2010 season, which is the top 6K mark in the MWC so far this fall.
"She ran a great race against a very talented group. This is an honor and reward for all of her hard work," commented head coach Kyle Kepler.
Thanks to Mergaert's performance, the Utes tallied 268 points to earn a 10th-place finish among 24 squads.
Utah will compete against Nevada in a dual meet Saturday in Reno, Nev.
