SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah cross country team will continue it season Saturday at the Montana State Bobcat Invitational in Bozeman, Mont. The Utes will compete in a three-mile dual-scored meet that will begin at 9 a.m. MT at the Bridger Creek Golf Course.
"We want to improve from our last meet at Utah State and really work on closing the gaps between our runners in this meet," said head coach Kyle Kepler.
Last year at this meet in Montana, the Utes finished sixth overall. Jenny McCune led the way for the Utes, completing the course in 18:16 for 22nd place.
"Last year, we saw the course for the first time so that made it difficult. This year, we are more experienced and are familiar with the terrain," said Kepler.
This week, Utah will also be more familiar with its competition because Utah State and Weber State will also be competing in the meet. The Utes faced these two schools in their first meet at the Utah State Open on Sept. 4. Several schools from the state of Montana as well as other NCAA Division II & III schools will also be competing.
Utah will again be led by McCune, who finished ninth overall in her first meet. Kepler also will be looking for Nikki Dotter to have another strong finish after finishing second for the Utes in her first collegiate race. Amanda Mergaert will be making her season debut in Montana, which will give the team another veteran presence.
"I also will look for AuraLea Fain, Alexis Laws and Rebekah Winterton to close the gap and finish closer to Dotter," stated Kepler.
Kepler's Thoughts
"We had a great week of practice, I was very pleased. We need to have our five scoring runners to close the gaps this week. The terrain [of the Montana State Bobcat Invitational] has hills at the beginning but is flat the rest of the way. We need to get a good start and be ready to compete hard at the end."
