STANFORD, CALIF. - The University of Utah track and field distance runners competed at the Payton Jordan Carnival Invitational on Saturday night. True freshman Amanda Mergaert won her heat in the 800m run with a new lifetime personal best and volunteer assistant coach Shayla Houlihan won her heat in the 5000m run.
"This was a great day for Amanda and Shayla," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "Amanda won her heat and finished around fifteen overall but she set a new PR by more than two seconds, which was really great for her to be doing right now in preparation for the conference championships coming up. For Shayla to finish that race in under sixteen minutes is very impressive, especially since she hasn't competed at that distance for five years. Lucy had a tough race after tripping, but she worked hard to get back and keep going. She couldn't quite get around the pack in the last lap to move up a little more, but she gave a great effort."
Mergaert, a freshman from Shelby Township, Mich., won her heat in 800m run on Saturday. She outran her previous personal best time (2:10.28) by more than two seconds to finish in 2:07.99.
In the 1500m run, sophomore Lucy Yates Ute had a slight trip at the first of the race, but worked the rest of the race to recover. She finished seventh in her heat with a time of 4:42.21.
Houlihan competed in her second ever 5000m race on Saturday. She won her heat with a new lifetime personal best time of 15:56.54. This was the first time in five years that Houlihan has competed at this distance.
