SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (7-14, 2-3 MWC) were defeated by No. 56-ranked San Diego State (10-12, 4-1 MWC), 5-2, Saturday at the Liberty Park Tennis Center.
The Utes began the day with a win in doubles from the No. 2 position of Timmy Allin and Jason Smits. The Ute pair topped Juan Gomez and Luis Rattenhuber, 8-2.
The Aztecs came back with a win from the No. 1 slot. Phillip Eilers and Alex Golding fell to Achim Vladimirschii and Giovanni Vaglietti, 8-4.
Utah clinched the doubles point from the No. 3 spot. Stephen Jacobs and Benito Suriano defeated Andre Feliz and Tim Schulz van Endert, 8-6.
San Diego State tied the match at 1-1 from the No. 1 singles position. Eilers was defeated by Gomez, 6-4, 6-3. The Aztecs continued with wins from the Nos. 6 and 4 slots. Dmytro Mamedov fell to Feliz, 6-1, 6-0, and Allin was defeated by Rattenhuber, 7-5, 6-3.
In the No. 3 position Golding earned Utah's second point downing Vaglietti, 0-6, 7-5, 6-4.
The Aztecs clinched the match from the No. 2 spot. Smits was defeated by Vladimirschii in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. In the No. 5 position Jacobs fell to Schulz van Endert, 7-5, 6-4.
Up next Utah hosts rival BYU Saturday, April 24 beginning at 12 p.m. at Liberty Park Tennis Center.
