LARAMIE, Wyo.- The 39th-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (14-6, 6-0) blanked Wyoming (11-6, 2-2) by a score of 7-0, in its third match of the weekend. The Utes' went a perfect 3-0 to remain the only undefeated team in the Mountain West Conference. Senior Andrea Maughan clinched Sunday's win over the Cowgirls by defeating Sasa Nemcova, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 6 singles position.
"This was a great team win," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "It puts us on the verge of being the conference champions. I can't say enough about how hard the young women on our team fought to beat a very good Wyoming team."
In doubles play, junior Evgenia Kryuchkova and sophomore Lisa Johnson downed Paloma Navarro and Sarah Summerfield, 8-4, at the No. 3 spot.
Maughan and fellow senior Erin Monson fell in a close, 9-8(1), match to Alexandra Kovacs and Rebecca Berger at the No. 2 position.
Sophomore Anastasia Putilina and freshman Paige Miles defeated Kim van Ginkel and Simona Synkova at the No. 1 spot,9-8(3), to secure the doubles point for the Utes.
In singles play, Kryuchkova downed Kovacs, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 2 position, to put Utah up 2-0. The Ute is on an 11-0 run, including being 6-0 against conference opponents.
Monson defeated Synkova at the No. 3 spot, 7-5, 6-1, to make the score 3-0 in favor of Utah.
Maughan then clinched the match at 4-0 from the No. 6 position.
Miles topped Berger, 6-3, 6-7(8), 10-4, at the No. 4 spot to put the Utes up 5-0 over the Cowgirls.
Johnson extended her run to 4-0 with her, 2-6, 7-6, 6-0, defeat of van Ginkel at the No. 5 position.
Putilina topped Summerfield in a three-set match at the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(3), to make the final score 7-0. The Ute is on a five match winning streak that includes upsets of two top 50-ranked players.
The Utes are 6-0 against conference opponents and have won 12 out of their last 13 matches overall.
Utah hits the road for its final two conference matches against New Mexico and TCU. The Utes face the Aztecs April 17 and the Horned frogs April 18 in Albuquerque. They only need to win out of the two matches to clinch at least a tie for the top spot in the conference.
