SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (4-10) was defeated by Cornell (10-4), 4-3, Tuesday at the Eccles Tennis Center.
Utah won one of the doubles matches, Timmy Allin and Jason Smits topped Mirza Klis and Jonathan Jaklitsch, 9-7, from the No. 2 position. The Big Red captured the doubles point, Phillip Eilers and Alex Golding were defeated by Andy Gauthier and Jeremy Feldman in a tie-breaker at the No. 1 slot, 9-8(5). In the No. 3 spot Stephen Jacobs and Benito Suriano fell to Jonathan Fife and Evan Bernstein, 9-7.
In singles, the Utes fought back with wins from the Nos. 1, 5 and 6 positions. Eilers topped Jaklitsch, 6-3, 6-0, Allin defeated Bernstein, 7-6(5), 6-3, and Jacobs beat Kils, 6-4, 6-7(5), 10-4.
The Utes came up short in the match with Cornell taking three singles matches. In the No. 2 slot Smits was defeated by Gauthier, 7-5, 6-3, Suriano fell to Feldman in three sets in the No. 3 spot, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. In the No. 4 position Golding was defeated by Fife, 6-3, 6-4.
The Utes will host New Mexico State Friday, March 26 at the Liberty Park Tennis Courts beginning at 1 p.m. weather permitting.
