COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Mountain West Conference announced that sophomore Ellis Walters earned the conference's Diver of the Week honor, the first such honor in Walters' collegiate career.
"I'm really excited for Ellis. She has come a long way this year and she's getting better and better every meet," said head coach Greg Winslow. "She's a hard worker and this is a great way for her to end the semester."
The Indianapolis native posted Utah's highest scores on the boards during the meets against Seattle on Friday and Arkansas on Saturday. The Utah divers competed in an exhibition during the meet with the Seattle where Walters tallied a score of 244.80 points and 240.45 in the 3-meter and 1-meter dives, respectively. Against Arkansas, Walters posted an NCAA-qualifying score in the 1-meter dive and placed second (273.45). She also finished third in the 3-meter dive (257.55).
"I am really surprised," Walters said. "I dove well but nothing too out of the ordinary. But it's the first time that I've earned this award so I'm really excited."
This is the second time Walters has qualified for the NCAA Diving Regionals, which will take place in March. She first qualified during her freshman year. During the 2009-10 season, Walters placed third in the 1-meter dive, sixth in the 3-meter dive, and eighth in the platform dive at the MWC Championships and was thus named to the all-MWC team in all three boards.
"I'm happy with the way she has been diving especially since she's coming back from an injury," said diving coach Richard Marschner. "She has literally improved at every meet and we're going to keep building on that."
