COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- On Tuesday night, the Mountain West Conference announced that sophomore Nelson Foo and senior Kwan Ling Yu were named the MWC Men's and Women's Diver of the Week, while senior Natalie Edge earned the MWC Women's Swimmer of the Week award.
"It is so amazing to have three of our athletes earn this honor in the same week," said head coach Greg Winslow. "I'm very proud of them and what they have accomplished so far this season. The best is yet to come."
Last Friday, all three athletes achieved victory in their individual events against Denver.
Hailing from Hong Kong, Foo won both the 1-meter and the 3-meter dives against the Pioneers with scores of 346.95 and 326.10, respectively. This is the second time Foo has earned this honor this season, the first being the week of Oct. 13 for his success on the boards at the Mesa State Invitational, where he scored 466.15 on the 1-meter dive and 458.95 on the 3-meter dive.
Last season, Foo placed 14th in the 3-meter dive (575.45 points), 20th in the preliminaries of 1-meter (245 points), and 15th in the platform dive (237.10 points) at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships. Before coming to Utah, Foo dove in the 2009 World Swimming Championships in Rome and placed third in 3-meter synchro in the 2009 Hong Kong East Asian Games.
Against Denver last Friday, Yu topped the charts on the 1-meter and 3-meter dives for the women's side with respective scores of 265.35 and 276.90. This is the second time for Yu, a fellow Hong Kong native, to earn the honors as well. She achieved MWC Women's Diver of the Week last season for the week of Nov. 10, 2009.
Yu saw a lot of success last season as well, as she placed second in the platform dive (233.55) and seventh on the 3-meter dive (301.10) at the 2010 MWC Championships. She also placed 17th in the 3-meter dive (504.75) and 14th overall (197.30) at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships. During her sophomore year with the Utes, she was named MWC Champion in the platform dive (218.6).
Edge, from South Jordan, Utah, achieved victory against Denver in the 100 free (51.38) as well as in the 200 free (1:53.95). She also swam in the winning 400 medley relay against the Pioneers (3.48.91). This is the first time Edge has earned the MWC Swimmer of the Week award in her collegiate career.
Last season, Edge won the MWC title in the 100 free (49.82) while she was also named to the all-MWC team for the 50, 100, and 200 free. Edge currently holds the University of Utah school records in the 200, 400, and 800 free relays. In Utah's all-time women's top 10 swimming records, Edge holds spots in the 50 free (22.92), the 100 free (49.76), and the 200 free (1:49.13).
The next meet for the Utes is at Notre Dame on Nov. 12 in Notre Dame, Ind. The competition will begin at 5 p.m. ET.
