LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The University of Utah swimming team finished its second day of strong performances at the Arena Invitational at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool alongside 17 other university squads on Friday night.
"This meet simulates how hard it is to swim for four days straight so it is great practice for the conference meet," head coach Greg Winslow said. "We swam really well today. There were 28 season-best times and even two all-time school records posted."
The Ute women took their squad to the final heat in five of the twelve events, including the 200 medley relay, the 800 free relay, the 100 fly, the 400 IM, and the 100 back.
Traycie Swartz posted the second-fastest time ever by a Ute in the 100 back, where she placed 28th (56.85). Jana Willsey, who placed 36th in the 400 IM preliminaries, also worked her way into school history, posting the ninth-fastest time ever by a Ute (4:32.92).
The ninth-place 200 medley relay was swum by Swartz, Samantha Zuch, Hannah Caron, and Natalie Edge (1:43.84). The same women led Utah to a 13th-place finish in the 800 free relay as well (7:36.61).
In other final heat finishes, Caron placed 17th in the 100 fly (55:49) while Maiya Otsuka came in 31st in the 400 IM (4:31.91).
The Ute men swam their way into six of the twelve events including the 200 medley relay, the 800 free relay, the 400 IM, the 100 back, the 100 breast, and the 100 fly.
"While the men didn't post history-making times, I was really pleased with how they performed in the breast and back strokes today," Winslow said.
Major Robinson came in 18th place in the 100 back (51.72) while Austin Fiascone and Brent Murray finished 21st (52.32). Brent Murray also posted a strong non-scored time in the 100 back (51.67).
Garrett Peterson placed in 17th place in the 100 breast final heat (57.82). Also in the 100 breast final race was Corey Williams who finished 26th (59.82), Andy Choi in 29th (1:00.85), and Tim Leonhart in 31st (1:02.18).

Fiascone, Peterson, Donohue, and (Brent) Murray polished of the tenth spot in the 200 medley relay (1:33.63). Brent and Eric Murray, Bjorn Gunnarsson, and Robinson led the Utes to an eighth-place finish in the 800 free relay (6:59.91).
"Tomorrow is technically our strongest day on paper," Winslow asserted. "Hopefully we'll continue to see some great swims."
