University of Utah cross country student-athlete Amanda Mergaert will be competing at the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships at 10:08 a.m. MT on Monday, Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind. The meet will be held on the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course. Watch the race here LIVE.
Mergaert qualified for the meet and earned All-Region recognition from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) after finishing ninth at the NCAA Mountain Regional Championships last weekend in Salt Lake City. Mergaert completed the six-kilometer course at Rose Park Golf Course with a new personal-record time of 20:45.2.
"Amanda had a terrific week of practice," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "She's not satisfied with just qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Her goals include running her best race of the season and competing for the highest possible spot. Amanda is comfortable on this course. She will rely on the success she had at the Pre-Nationals race a month ago and Alyssa [Abbott] for guidance through this exciting experience."
This was the first time Mergaert qualified to compete at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. She is the second Ute in the last three years to individually qualify for the NCAA Championships as an individual after Abbot achieved the feat as a junior in 2008. Abbott went on to a 76th-place finish out of 255 women with a 6K time of 21:00.5.
Mergaert competed on the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at the NCAA Pre-National meet on Oct. 16 and enjoyed personal-best performance after completing the course in a time of 21:05.8, which was good for 32nd overall.
