LAST WEEK
The University of Utah swimming and diving team swam against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in South Bend, Ind. last Friday. The Utah men lost with a score of 184-116, while the Ute women lost with 185.5-112.5. Despite falling to the Fighting Irish, the Utes pulled out all the stops to swim the hardest they have all season, according to head coach Greg Winslow.
One of the biggest victories for the Utes was in their win in the 400 free relay with Samantha Zuch, Natalie Edge, Chardonnay Biter-Mundt, and Traycie Swartz at the helm (3:25.75). This is the fastest time in the 400 free so far this season in the Mountain West Conference, and has been lasted as the 16th fastest in the nation.
Other wins for the Utah women include Samantha Zuch in the 500 free (5:00.41), Edge who tied for first in the 100 free (51.43), and Hannah Caron in the 100 fly (55.35) and the 200 IM (2:04.17).
Victories for the Ute men include Karson Applin in the 100 fly (50.57), Major Robinson in the 200 back (1:50.51), Brent Murray in the 200 free (1:42.12), and Eric Bonicelli achieved a season-best time when he finished only .02 seconds behind Notre Dame's Connor Wills in the 200 fly (1:53.30). Applin, Andy Lamb, Bjorn Gunnarsson, and Brent Murray also took home the win in the 400 free relay (3:06.08). The win in the 200 medley relay can be attributed to Applin, Austin Fiascone, Garrett Peterson, and Garret Beaman (1:33.11).
LAST MEETING
The Utah women's swimming and diving team last swam against San Diego State along with Colorado State in January. The Utes fell to both schools, with a scores of 173 - 125 and 153 - 147, respectively.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Greg Winslow
"The Arena Invitational is the only meet that even comes close to our conference competition. In fact, a lot of schools from our conference like BYU, Air Force, San Diego State, Colorado State will be there. It will even give us a chance to look at our conference for next year. This is going to be a great opportunity for us, to take advantage of competing against some of the top teams in the country like Stanford and UCLA. It's going to be a lot of fun to see where we fit with them."
"I'm really proud of how our girls swam last week. Their winning 400 free relay is listed as the 16th fastest time in the country and is the top time in the conference for the 400 free relay this season."
"Our divers will be competing in Arizona this week against some of the top divers in the country. There's going to be a few Pac-10 schools there as well. It will be fun to see how our divers stack up, especially the women. This is another great opportunity for our team to gain some experience."
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
The College Swimming Coaches Association of America recently announced SDSU as the 23rd ranked women's swimming team in America. The Aztecs' dual meet record stands at 6-0 and 5-0 in the MWC.
Strong competitors include Kelly Marquenie in the distance freestyle events, Leona Jennings in backstroke and IM, Katelyn Weddle in breaststroke, as well as Stephanie Koch and Meghan Zimmer in freestyle events. Each of these women broke Aztec Aquaplex pool records against Oregon State in October. Weddle finished 12th in the 100 breast at the 2010 NCAA championships last year.
Brooke Vessey, Emilee and Leona Jennings, Kim Bierwith, Mikaela Macklin, and Weddle all represented San Diego State at the 2010 ConocoPhillips Swimming National Championships. Weddle, Emilee and Leona Jennings, and Vessey won the 200 medley relay at the 2010 MWC Championships and competed in the 400 medley relay at nationals. Macklin competed in the breaststroke events while Bierwith swam in a relay event with her club team, the Walnut Creek Aquabears.
