SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's soccer team (3-11-0) dropped a 1-0 decision to Oregon State (8-1-1) as the Beavers scored a header with less than two minutes left in the game.
Oregon State got its game winner off the head of Melinda Ingalls as she buried the service provided by Justyne Freud off a free kick in Utah territory with just 1:45 remaining in the contest. The Beavers got the win despite being shorthanded as Jayne Eadie received a straight red card for a challenge in the 67th minute, leaving them with only 10 players on the field.
Utah created several scoring opportunities, including a header from freshman midfielder Harley Spier that sailed inches over the crossbar, but couldn't capitalize as Colleen Boyd made five saves in the Beaver goal. Utah junior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen (first half) and freshman netminder Cheyanne Mulcock (second half) combined to make five saves in goal for the Utes.
OSU outshot Utah 13-11 overall, with shots on goal going 6-5 for the Beavers. Utah earned eight corner kicks to just one for Oregon State, while OSU was whistled for 14 fouls to Utah's 12.
The Utes continue Mountain West Conference play at home Friday, Oct. 8, as they host Wyoming at 7 p.m. Utah will be looking to make it two straight league wins after shutting out Air Force last Friday in its conference opener, 1-0.
Postgame Quotes
Utah Head Coach Rich Manning:
"I was proud of the team in a couple of areas and I think we got better today. We did not have the best start in the first half but we were able to fix it and play a better second half, so I think the team is maturing a bit. We created some opportunities, earned a lot of corners and got to the end line well, so I think those are good signs."
"I think when they got the red card, it knocked us off our rhythm a little bit. That was the first time we have seen that all year, so it took us a little while to figure out how to play it."
"It will be nice to be home Friday. We haven't gotten three straight days of training in a while, so we are looking forward to that."
