THIS WEEK
The University of Utah swimming and diving team will face off against Denver University at 6 p.m., on Oct. 29 at Ute Natatorium.
LAST WEEK
The University of Utah swimming and diving team took advantage of its off week by bringing in prospective student-athletes for the 2011-12 season and showing them around campus as well as the Salt Lake area.
The last meet for Utah was against Colorado State on Oct. 15. The Ute women's 160-140 victory broke the Rams two-year winning streak in the series.
LAST MEETING
Last October, Utah squared off against Denver and North Texas simultaneously. Although Utah performed well, winning six of the events and defeating North Texas, Denver came out on top. Denver won on both sides by scores 163 to 137 for the men and 162 to 134 for the women. It was a close meet between Utah and Denver until the last two events for both teams as Denver swept the distance freestyle events among others. The Pioneer women took first in nearly every relay and their men's team won both events on the diving boards.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Greg Winslow
"Denver has a really good team this year, having already beaten Air Force and Wyoming at their recent relay meet. They will present a good challenge for our team. Our swimmers are ready for them."
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
Denver University's swimming and diving team has some real talent to contend with this year.
For the women, Melissa Greeves, Katy Motsinger, and Grace Kittle achieved nine NCAA standards last season and all of them are returning this year. Greeves will be a competitor in freestyle and butterfly events, while Kittle is impressive in the breast and relay events. Motsinger is the Sun Belt Conference record holder in the backstroke.
As for the Denver men, Clayton Myers met NCAA standards in the distance freestyle and IM events, while Scott Madaras met the NCAA standard in butterfly and relay events. Cody Stambaugh will be a challenging opponent for the Ute men divers. Stambaugh led Denver at the Sun Belt Conference Championships last season with first-place finishes in both dives and earned the SBC Male Diver of the Year title.
